7-year-old 'tied and beaten' by teacher at religious school in Malaysia

A teacher at an Islamic school in Malaysia allegedly beat a seven-year-old boy to death after accusing him of stealing £1.40 from another pupil.
.The 26-year-old was said to have tied the boy to a window and battered and strangled him.
Police in the northern Malaysia state of Perlis said Saiful Syazani Saiful Sopfidee slipped into a coma and died in hospital. He had multiple head injuries and internal bleeding.
The attack took place at a private religious school.
The pupil had been accused of stealing seven ringgit (£1.40) from a classmate.

Police said the teacher had repeatedly accused him of stealing.

The teacher is in custody while the death is investigated and could be charged with murder, which carries a sentence of death by hanging.

Malaysian news reports said it was the worst known case of student abuse in at least 15 years.

Saiful’s adoptive mother Hazirah Chin, 38, said he was an ‘obedient and cheerful’ boy who had never had any problems at school. I decided to send him to a religious school as he was keen on Islamic studies.’

She added that she found out about the incident after receiving a call from the teacher telling her that the boy had been admitted to the Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in the state capital Kangar.

‘When I arrived at the hospital a doctor told me that he believed my son was tied up before being assaulted as there were rope marks on his wrists,’ she said.

The boy’s father, Saiful Sopfidee Marzuki, 34, said: ‘I was devastated to see my son in a coma at the hospital. There were bruises all over his face.’

He was buried next to his mother, who died in 2007, at the Tok Padok Muslim cemetery in Kangar.
